Entering The Matrix... of fashion

Neo, but make it fashion.

Who would’ve thought that Neo from The Matrix would inspire the outfit that pushed me out of my comfort zone when it comes to fashion? Definitely not me. But just like the Matrix, fashion is not always what it seems.

To create this look, I took Neo’s distinct all-black clothing palette and paired it with a leather jacket (similar to Trinity's in the movie) and finally, a pop of red from the zip-up tank.

This outfit is perfect for a fall or early-winter day because it combines multiple clothing items to build layers, which are crucial for almost any outfit, especially those worn in the cooler months.

This outfit has a very special place in my heart because it not only deviated from what I usually wear but it taught me how to layer.

Layering can be a tricky but magical thing. It can take an outfit from a 2 to a 10. However, it can quickly turn into an uncoordinated mess, which I have indeed endured in the past. So, when you’re starting out, I find that it helps to begin with a statement piece (in my case, the zip-up tank). The statement piece is an article of clothing that you want to stand out. Now, look for a secondary colour within that statement piece to match your layers with. I chose the black lining in the red tank and thus, put the outfit together with a black long-sleeve (under the tank), black wide-leg twill pants, a black leather jacket, black slip-on loafers, and a black beret (which I also find would work nicely in red).

I wore this outfit to dinner with friends and felt so ‘Matrix-chic’, walking through the city streets. So, next time you need some inspo for an outfit, step out of your comfort zone and seek creativity through some iconic movie classics and style your outfit around a statement piece.
